Lethe

The river waits
for drowsy spirits to stumble
then slip
caught by currents
that drift to smoky distances
beyond time and space.

The vaporous river flows on,
banked by old worlds
dream worlds that rose to form
when Adam, tired, slept,
dreaming his melancholy dreams
of sin and loss
that even now darken
the tormented nights of man.
